THE STYROFOAM PELLET

Styrofoam packaging has made strides over the past few years. In fact many produces color coordinate by color to show their origin. For example white means completely made from raw materials and green when made from 70% or more recycled material.

We know that when ordering products or supplies your shipper may not disclose or be aware that they utilize styrofoam pellets. So we wanted to offer you some basic tips on getting rid of those environmentally pesky pieces of styrofoam.

Do not purchase styrofoam in the first place. Try to find companies that use alternatives which are more biodegradable. For example, companies are starting to ship items using cardboard shreds, molded pulp and paper wrap.

When you receive styrofoam pellets in the form of packaging, reuse them in the next package you will be sending out. This way, you are not creating any more demand for styrofoam products. If you have no packaging use coming up soon, take your styrofoam peanuts to a nearby packaging store and donate them

On September 7, 2011 Wrecycleit welcomed Terry McAuliffe, Erica Trout of Virginia Recycling Association, Scott Leigh of Henrico County DSS and Manion Jamison of Director of Workforce Development.

They were all present to talk recycling, jobs and the economic benefits of Wrecycleit. Even with the driving rain and humidity a by product of Hurricane Katiana, the discussion on the new green economy was lively and forward moving.

These representatives discussed the issues of joblessness, increasing recycling rates and prioritizing comprehensive job creation.

"The Wrecycleit model for growth and success is a smart way to grow a business in today's economy.", says Terry Macauliffe a longtime leader and political advisor for the United States democratic party, businessman, and "green" entrepreneur. Using recycling and partnering with workforce funding sources makes recycling for your customers a no brainer." continued Terry

The dialogue between Richmond City and Henrico County staff displayed Central Virginia's sense of urgency and commitment to getting people working. The common phrase of the day had to have been "Bridging the Gap". Bridging the gap represents how recycling rates can directly impact the regions job creation.

"If you raised the tipping fees or increased mandatory recycling rates, not only would jobs be created but new businesses will be formed to service that need." Erica Trout.

Increasing recycling rates would create an entirely different economy in Central Virginia.

If there is a greater market for items such as plastic, glass, construction debris and more than Virginia would need more manufacturing warehouses, more collection companies and more haulers. The Box and Our Economy

We are at a time where the economy means something different for us all. Economy = Jobs, Economy = Protection, Economy = Business, Economy = Layoff, Economy = late bills.

Unfortunately for us who are trying to survive through this economy our decision makers have just as many solutions and agendas as we have concerns. It doesn't matter if you live on the South Side, West End, The Fan or on the Northside many are concerned about today and terrified about tomorrow.

As a recycler I don't know how to fix the economy or what another household need to do to make it another 30 days. But what I do know is that in the folds of your multi-purpose, often stored and always dumped Cardboard Box there is an opportunity!

Cardboard boxes are amazing. They help ship food, medicine and leather jackets. I'm sure everyone knows that. But did you know that 1 cardboard box can equal 9 jobs.

So here is how The Box works:

A box is collected by area recyclers and who transport that box to a local materials recovery facility (MRF) and make a pile until someone comes and picks it up from them.

Once the MRF has enough cardboard boxes a hauler comes to transport the boxes to a paper mill. Once the paper mill has the cardboard it's then recycled into other paper products including another cardboard box.

The cool thing about this process is that it can happen again and again and again. So as the President talks tax credits, tax cuts, incentives to families, corporate tax codes and anything else he is throwing in the bill, think about what THE BOX can do:

Recycling collector= 2 employees (Driver/Collector)

MRF= 2 employees (Fork lift driver/Sorter)

Hauler = 2 employees (Driver/Dispatcher)

Paper mill = 3 employees (Collector/Processor/Order taker)

Off course these numbers can go up or down but what I have seen this is pretty standard. With a cardboard box you don't need a job council, be a republican or democrat, be a tree hugger or a proud SUV driver. You simply need to want our communities, or families and our nation to get out of this economic slump so we can focus on football, stop working on the weekends and spend more time on vacations. You simply need to recycle THE BOX

What is the Green Print?
Green Print is workforce development program designed by Wrecycleit specifically for foster youth. It is a full service program that provides foster youth with interpersonal skill development, waste management/recycling employment education and job placement assistance. Providers who service foster youth can contract with Wrecycleit to provide a full service workforce program.

Why is there a Green Print
The unemployment rate for teenagers is currently 25%, near a record high. But the unemployment rate for foster youth is 60%. Foster youth are less likely to be employed and earn lower wages than other youth, even when compared to demographically similar low income youth.

By tapping into the "green economy" Green Print participants will have the opportunity to build experiences and form relationships with area professionals and companies.

Why "Green Jobs"
"Green Jobs"aren't hi-tech career exclusive. It includes hi-touch careers such as landscaping, recycling, energy auditing and more. These are all careers that allow youth to utilize training, experience and effort to make liveable wages.

How to Start A Recyling Program at Work

Recycling at work doesn't have to be difficult. It should be simple and easy. Changing habits takes time and effort, complicating that with to many rules and making a big deal out of being environmentally responsible defeats the purpose. So to help you get started we have created a quick to do list that will help you get started. Good Luck!

1. Designate an Office "Recycling Coordinator." Select someone in the office to oversee your recycling program. Your recycling coordinator will be responsible for arranging collection of recyclables, encouraging employees to recycle and overall monitoring of the recycling program.

2. Determine what your going to recycle. Depending on your line of work, you could produce more paper than boxes or more aluminum than paper. Determining what items you collect is the first step in starting your recycling program. If your not sure what you can recycle. Wrecycleit has a list of materials that most recycling centers and collectors utilize.

3. Arrange for Collection. There are several options to consider for collection. Of course we suggest you utilize Wrecycleit. But if we are not in your area , you may contact your waste hauler to arrange collection, designate an employee to deliver your recyclables to the nearest recycling center or contract with your janitorial staff.

4. Get Recycling Bins. You may buy recycling bins if you like. They can be bought online or at a local homegoods/hardware store. But if you really want to recycle take a look at your paper reem boxes (Hammermill, Hewlett Packer, Xerox or Staples) and turn that box into an instant bin. That way when you recycle you can throw the entire box out.

5. Location, Location, Location. To generate maximum participation, be sure to place recycling bins in each workstation or office, as well as in central areas such as lunchrooms, lounges and office machine rooms.

5. Make it Easy -- Label the Bins. Clearly label every recycling bin to indicate EXACTLY what items go in the bin, e.g., "Aluminum Cans," "Mixed Paper." With Wrecycleit, you can put everything in one bin. We offer single stream recycling!

Our bag system is a simple strategy we have created to determine how much our customers are recycling while making recycling collection as quick and quiet as possible. The maximum a customer using interior collection can have picked up at each collection is (3) 55 gallon bags. These are bags our collectors carry on them and leave with customers.

In March, the international billion dollar corporation announced that they have developed the world's first plastic bottle made completely out of plants. Dig this, the plastic bottle doesn't have one once of petroleum in at and it's biodegradable.

According to Pepsi this revolutionary bottle will hit production next year. That means this plastic bottle which is made from switch grass, pine bark and corn husk will be in stores soon.

We are offering a unique fundraising opportunity for non-profits, churches and schools. Most recycling fundraisers are based on the material that you can collect. This strategy takes staff time and energy. In addition to staff time you are often responsible for collecting and storing the items until it's time to send them out.

We must admit, recycling in offices isn't as easy as a 1-2-3. It's much trickier than most people think. In fact setting up your recycling is the easy part. So we have decided to run a 3 part series on how to run an awesome office recycling program. Don't worry you won't hear any of the step by step crap that we used when we first started. We are offering up lessons learned as we work towards becoming the leader in office recycling.

SPACE THE FINAL FRONTIER

Space is the biggest asset and hurdle for most recycling programs. With recycling collection space means where will items be collected by staff and where will items be picked up. As in most rubbish removal there not in the same place. At least we hope not. Many offices have key areas that allow for the greatest collection impact. But each one of them has their strengths and weaknesses. As for collecting that's simple inside or outside, right? Wrong!

Kitchen: POSITIVES-This is a great spot for collection. There's a lot of foot traffic and it may have the space for a larger receptacle. Staff also spends time preparing lunches, getting snacks and/or a drink which may equal more recycling. DRAWBACKS-Using larger receptacles sounds like a good idea but the larger the can the more trash finds its way in it. Having a large receptacle around, staff tends to throw everything in it. Also if your collecting cardboard you will begin to find boxes on lunch tables. Then all of a sudden the kitchen area becomes a mess on collection day. Making it difficult for your recycler to collect. Also, don't be to quick to set up your recycling trash can in the kitchen hoping co-workers will just throw their materials away because most people only prepare their food in the kitchen but they take it to other areas where it finds it way into the trash anyway!

Copy Machine: POSITIVES-Super for collecting paper especially scrap paper. It also gives you a chance to use the reem boxes for something other than stacking them when empty. A reem box makes a great receptacle. This area is usually in a common area which makes it a great place to collect those loose items such as plastic bottles. DRAWBACKS-With it being in a common area chances are you will have to use a smaller receptacle and squeeze it in a area that prevents the toss and go.

Desk: POSITIVES- This is the best way to keep the most recyclable materials from your waste stream. It is convenient and doesn't require much work on staffs part. Not much work is a good thing! DRAWBACKS-The desk cans are small primarily 10 gallons. That means its one box away from being filled or one report with spelling errors that had to be tossed away from being at capacity. This makes for a collection problem. Where does the staff take it. Is it going to be emptied every night. Will your company pay the extra expense for daily collection? Lastly, with it being so convenient many times trash and other items that can't be recycled find its way in the trash can.

Interior collection: POSITIVES-Staff only has to get it to one area and the collectors will do the rest. DRAWBACKS: Will your collector come in during work hours or off hours. There could be an added expense for each. Make sure you ask your collector!

Exterior collection: POSITIVES-You don't have to wait for collection day to get the waste out of your office. DRAWBACKS- Your property management may not allow you to have receptacles outside of your office. This could also be an added expense. Many outside bins cost over $50

When your setting up your recycling, make sure you have a good idea of where your going to collect the waste. It will be a trail and error and may require adjustments along the way. But it is worth the effort.

When a recycled material, rather than a raw material, is used to make a new product, natural resources and energy are conserved. This is because recycled materials have already been refined and processed once; manufacturing the second time is much cleaner and less energy-intensive than the first. For example, manufacturing with recycled aluminum cans uses 95 percent less energy than creating the same amount of aluminum with bauxite.

If you look at the big picture of what it takes to create a the products we use each day from scratch , specifically to get the raw materials, transport them, process them and manufacture them -- making goods with recycled material like paper, plastic, glass, and metal is a major energy saver.

It's estimated that manufacturing one ton of office and computer paper with recycled paper stock can save nearly 3,000 kilowatt hours over the same ton of paper made with virgin wood products.

A ton of soda cans made with recycled aluminum saves an amazing 21,000 kilowatt hours by reducing the virgin bauxite (bozite) ore that would have to be mined, shipped, and refined. That’s a 95% energy savings. A ton of PET plastic containers made with recycled plastic conserves about 7,200 kilowatt hours.The San Diego County Office of Education has figured out that recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to light a 100 watt light bulb for four hours.

SO HOW MUCH ENERGY IS ACTUALLY SAVED BY RECYCLING?

The amount of lost energy from throwing away recyclable commodities such as aluminum cans and newspapers is equivalent to the annual output of 15 power plants.

The energy savings applies to all recycling sectors:

Aluminum. Recycling of aluminum cans saves 95% of the energy required to make the same amount of aluminum from its virgin source. One ton of recycled aluminum saves 14,000 kilowatt hours (Kwh) of energy, 40 barrels of oil, 238 million Btu's of energy, and 10 cubic yards of landfill space.

Newsprint. One ton of recycled newsprint saves 601 Kwh of energy, 1.7 barrels of oil (71 gallons), 10.2 million Btu's of energy, 60 pounds of air pollutants from being released, 7,000 gallons of water, and 4.6 cubic yards of landfill space.Office Paper. One ton of recycled office paper saves 4,100 Kwh of energy, 9 barrels of oil, 54 million Btu's of energy, 60 pounds of air pollutants from being released, 7,000 gallons of water, and 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space.

Plastic. One ton of recycled plastic saves 5,774 Kwh of energy, 16.3 barrels of oil, 98 million Btu's of energy, and 30 cubic yards of landfill space.Steel. One ton of recycled steel saves 642 Kwh of energy, 1.8 barrels of oil, 10.9 million Btu's of energy, and 4 cubic yards of landfill space.

Glass. One ton of recycled glass saves 42 Kwh of energy, 0.12 barrels of oil (5 gallons), 714,000 Btu's of energy, 7.5 pounds of air pollutants from being released, and 2 cubic yards of landfill space. Over 30% of the raw material used in glass production now comes from recycled glass.As you can see, by recycling you are saving energy in addition to conserving resources and reducing pollution!

Aluminum begins as bauxite ore, after the material is found through mining it is refined into aluminum oxide, and ends up as blocks of aluminum, a supply chain that can take it halfway around the planet. Next the blocks are heated and turned into large rolls of aluminum before being transported yet again. It is at this point that the once mined rock is labeled and transported to a store near you.

Plastic bottles are made from PET (polyethylene terephthalate) aka fuel and has a less complicated supply chain, which involves making pellets from petroleum derivatives and then blow-molding the bottles. Plastic contains more petroleum, but aluminum requires more energy because of its higher melting point and complex processing.

Both types of container are frequently made from raw materials. This means that the materials used in the making of both has to be mined, drilled and pulled from the earth.

America recycles about 30 percent of plastic bottles but does better with aluminum cans. It recycles over half of all aluminum cans at a rate of 105,748 per minute, or 55.6 billion per year.

This means that Americans use around one can per day on average. Recycling an aluminum soda can saves enough energy to run a television for three hours or a 100-watt light bulb for four hours. This is equal to 0.4 kilowatt-hours or 0.28 kg of carbon dioxide.

In short, the making of Aluminum cans uses more natural resources and energy than plastic. Aluminum cans don't hold as much than plastic bottles. You would need to buy 5.6 aluminum cans to equal the volume a plastic 2 liter can hold.

The Nike Grind

Nike Grind is a Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program that was started in 1993.It was created to eliminate waste and create a new use for post-consumer, non-metal-containing athletic shoes of any brand. That means any shoe including Nike shoes that are returned due to material or workmanship defect can be reused.

After the shoes are collected they are ground up and separated into three distinct types of material: rubber from the outsole, foam from the midsole and fabric from the shoe's upper.

They then take the granulated materials and create soccer, football, baseball fields, weight room flooring and running tracks. The first synthetic turf soccer field installed with Nike Grind rubber was Douglas Park in Chicago

Sometimes it seems like modern America is one colossal plastic palace. The versatile material is put in our cars, toys, packaging, clothing, home goods, food utensils, medical devices and so much more. It is also littering our streets, clogging our waterways and choking marine life. Many plastics can be recycled easily, but how do consumers make sense of all the different types and rules?

On most plastic jars, containers and other packaging of products you buy, you'll find what's generally accepted as the recycling logo with a number in the middle and sometimes letters underneath stamped into the plastic.

Number 1 PlasticsPET or PETE (polyethylene terephthalate) Found in: Soft drink, water and beer bottles; mouthwash bottles; peanut butter containers; salad dressing and vegetable oil containers; ovenable food trays.Recycling: Picked up through most curbside recycling programs.Recycled into: Polar fleece, fiber, tote bags, furniture, carpet, paneling, straps, (occasionally) new containers

PET plastic is the most common for single-use bottled beverages, because it is inexpensive, lightweight and easy to recycle. It poses low risk of leaching breakdown products. Recycling rates remain relatively low (around 20%), though the material is in high demand by remanufacturers.

Number 2 Plastics HDPE (high density polyethylene) Found in: Milk jugs, juice bottles; bleach, detergent and household cleaner bottles; shampoo bottles; some trash and shopping bags; motor oil bottles; butter and yogurt tubs; cereal box linersRecycling: Picked up through most curbside recycling programs, although some allow only those containers with necks.Recycled into: Laundry detergent bottles, oil bottles, pens, recycling containers, floor tile, drainage pipe, lumber, benches, doghouses, picnic tables, fencing.

HDPE is a versatile plastic with many uses, especially for packaging. It carries low risk of leaching and is readily recyclable into many goods.

Number 3 PlasticsV (Vinyl) or PVC Found in: Window cleaner and detergent bottles, shampoo bottles, cooking oil bottles, clear food packaging, wire jacketing, medical equipment, siding, windows, pipingRecycling: Rarely recycled; accepted by some plastic lumber makers. Recycled into: Decks, paneling, mudflaps, roadway gutters, flooring, cables, speed bumps, mats
PVC is tough and weathers well, so it is commonly used for piping, siding and similar applications.

PVC contains chlorine, so its manufacture can release highly dangerous dioxins. If you must cook with PVC, don't let the plastic touch food. Also never burn PVC, because it releases toxins.

Number 4 Plastics LDPE (low density polyethylene) Found in: Squeezable bottles; bread, frozen food, dry cleaning and shopping bags; tote bags; clothing; furniture; carpet Recycling: LDPE is not often recycled through curbside programs, but some communities will accept it. LDPE is a flexible plastic with many applications. Historically it has not been accepted through most American curbside recycling programs, but more and more communities are starting to accept it.

Number 5 Plastics PP (polypropylene) Found in: Some yogurt containers, syrup bottles, ketchup bottles, caps, straws, medicine bottles Recycling: Number 5 plastics can be recycled through some curbside programs. Polypropylene has a high melting point, and so is often chosen for containers that must accept hot liquid. It is gradually becoming more accepted by recyclers.

Polystyrene can be made into rigid or foam products -- in the latter case it is popularly known as the trademark Styrofoam. Evidence suggests polystyrene can leach potential toxins into foods.

Number 7 Plastics Miscellaneous Found in: Three- and five-gallon water bottles, 'bullet-proof' materials, sunglasses, DVDs, iPod and computer cases, signs and displays, certain food containers, nylon Recycling: Number 7 plastics have traditionally not been recycled, though some curbside programs now take them.Recycled into: Plastic lumber, custom-made products
A wide variety of plastic resins that don't fit into the previous categories are lumped into number 7. A few are even made from plants (polyactide) and are compostable.

Polycarbonate is number 7, and is the hard plastic that has parents worried these days, after studies have shown it can leach potential hormone disruptors.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Located in the central North Pacific Ocean roughly at coordinates 135 to 155 degrees west and 35 to 42 degrees north lies a patch of plastic. It’s a patch whose size has been debated. Is it as big as the continental U.S. or is it as small as the size of Texas? Regardless of its size it represents. No scratch that. Regardless of how big or small this area of ocean is, it puts into pictures the dangers of plastic on our world and that is big all in itself.

So what is the patch. In technical terms, the patch is a concentrated area of pelagic plastics, chemical sludge and other debris that has been caught by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre. In other words it’s a space of land that has plastic and other trash stuck in a slowly moving, clockwise spiral of currents created by a high-pressure system of air currents. Its like an ocean desert calm and still. So the trash stays put in one area.

The patch formed gradually as a result of marine pollution that was gathered up by ocean currents. There is no concrete evidence on where the debris came from exactly, but it is estimated that 80% of the garbage comes from land and 20% comes from ships.

The bulk of the patch garbage is plastic. In fact according to the LA Times, plastic constitutes 90% of all trash floating in the world’s oceans. If you think that sounds bad, listen to this. The United Nations Environment Program estimates that every square mile of ocean host 46,000 pieces of floating plastics. In some areas like the patch there is more plastic than there is plankton. That means that 10% of all the plastic produced finds its way to the ocean. Some sinks and the rest floats until it finds its way to a shoreline near you.

Plastic floating on our oceans, plastic sinking to the ocean shore and plastic showing up on our beaches are only part of the problem. These plastics are showing up in the stomachs of marine birds and other animals. Not even their young are spared. Besides the actual ingestion of these plastics, the floating debris can absorb organic pollutants from seawater. So when the plastic is ingested a animals body mistakes it as estradiol (Estrodiol is a hormone that impacts the reproductive cycles and sexual functioning, but also affects other organs including the bones)
In the patch plastic waste is mistaken for food. At least 267 species in the North pacific Gyre are affected.

The patch symbolizes our Nations dependence on plastics and our throw away mentality. It can’t be any easier. Reduce-Reuse-Recycle. Reduce Reuse Recycle. I know as a recycling collection company it’s counterproductive to so focused on helping our society reduce its consumption. After all we need the waste to stay in business. But the more we learn about whats happening to our environment the more we are responsible for telling our neighbors about it right? So when I heard about the affects of Bisphenol A or BPA I thought it was interesting enough to pass on.

BPA was originally produced for use as a synthetic hormone in 1936. But since then it has been manufactured in excess of six billion pounds per year. BPA is most commonly used as the building block of polycarbonate plastic for products such as baby bottles,water bottles, epoxy resins (coatings that line food containers) and white dental sealants. It is also an additive in other types of plastic used to make children’s toys.

Unfortunately children are exposed to BPA well before they visit the toy store. Children’s exposure to BPA begins at conception, as chemicals, including BPA, enter into the womb. This is when they are most vulnerable to BPA entering their bodies.

Even after birth new borns still have underdeveloped detoxification mechanisms. It is those mechanism that help protect them from BPA as well as other drugs. This is important because without that strong line of defense they are at risk for even more BPA exposure. Exposure that comes from baby bottles and other plastics. Studies say that exposure can create adverse effects on intellectual ability, social behaviors, fertility, and potential for disease may take decades to detect.

But BPA doesn’t only affect the young. It affects nearly everyone. What makes this so interesting and scary is that many of the health related issues that are affecting our family and friends sound as if they can be BDA related. Take a look at some of the BDA affects so you can see what I'm talking about

Behavioral changes: Hyperactivity, increase in aggression, changes in response to painful or fear-provoking stimuli, impaired learning, reversal of normal sex differences in the brain structure and elimination of sex differences in behavior, decreased maternal behavior such as reductions in time spent nursing, increases in time resting away from offspring, and increases in time spent out of the nest, altered play and other socio-sexual behaviors and increased susceptibility to drug addiction

Diabetes and obesity: Creation of altered levels of blood glucose and insulin, insulin resistance, increased rate of postnatal growth in both males and females, accelerated postnatal growth is associated with obesity, insulin-resistant diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease

Early puberty: BPA can affect the timing of the onset of puberty.

Down Syndrome: BPA exposure is linked to an error in cell division called aneuploidy, which causes 10-20% of all birth defects in people, including Down Syndrome

Reduced sperm count: BPA decreases the levels of testosterone in males.

Breast cancer: Increased breast tissue development. Higher density breast tissue is a risk factor likely increases the risk of breast cancer in humans.

Prostate disease and cancer: BPA exposure significantly increase prostate size, proliferation of human prostate cancer cells

These affects occur at different levels of exposure. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, 95% of Americans have detectable levels of BPA in their bodies and it doesn't take that much to create problems. In a recent CDC study, the observed BPA levels detected—0.1 to 9 parts per billion (ppb)—were at and above the concentrations known to reliably cause adverse effects in laboratory experiments. Despite the fact that BPA is metabolized by the body, the findings show us that we are exposed to BPA everywhere.

These toxins enter our bodies in using various vehicles. Numerous studies show that polycarbonate plastics break down and leach BPA into food or beverages in contact with the plastic. In one study, BPA leaching was detected in 12 polycarbonate baby bottles after dishwashing, brushing, and boiling.

In general, plastics that are marked with recycle codes 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 are very unlikely to contain BPA. Some, but not all, plastics that are marked with recycle codes 3 or 7 may be made with BPA."

It may be impossible to live without some plastics, but with this information we can start to reduce our usage.

Recycling crayons not only puts less garbage in landfills it can save you money on new crayons or gifts. It also is a easy way to teach children the value(and fun)in recycling. In fact recycling crayons is recycling in it's truest sense. (taking the waste from something and turning it into more of the same original product)

The real environmental dangers of crayons come in the manufacturing stages. Crayons were once made with beeswax, but these days are usually made with paraffin. Paraffin is derived from fossil fuels. So making sure we not only reduce the number of crayons used but also recycle the old broken crayons helps us reduce fuel consumption.

Where are the Dumpster Sites?
Dumpster sites are currently spread out thorough the Greater Richmond Area. The sites are determined by how many collections sites we have in a particular area.

Where do materials go after Wrecycleit collects them?
All materials go to TFC Recycling processing center in Chester, VA.

Do I have to separate paper from the other materials?
For most of our customers we offer single stream collection. Simply place all of your recyclables in your bin or receptacle.

Due to specific items collected some commercial clients must separate paper from other items to avoid contamination.

Do I need to rinse out my containers before I place them in the bin? We encourage you to rinse all containers to prevent insects and minimize odor. Also, please remove all lids. The lids are not made from the same material as the recyclable container, therefore they are considered contaminates to the recycling stream.

Did I need to remove labels before placing recyclables in my bin? No, the labels will disintegrate in the recycling process.

Why doesn't Wrecycleit accept all types of plastics? We accept all plastic bottles. Common plastic bottles include soda bottles, milk jugs, laundry detergent bottles, shampoo bottles, and contact solution bottles. Plastics we don't collect are based off the lack of demand and processing technology. Basically, if no end user wants that plastic then most processors won't take them.

Should I break down my corrugated cardboard?
You don't have to but if you could it would be helpful. Big bulk boxes takes up spaces in dumpsters and trucks. Besides breaking down boxes in your office or work space can get a little noisy.

Why do I have to pay for recycling?
It costs money to to employ collectors, sorters and drivers. This does not include the cost of collection vehicles and their maintenance. We utilize our Dumpster Site system and smaller vehicles to keep cost as low as possible. The value of the collected recyclables constantly fluctuates; meanwhile our fixed costs remain constant. Therefore, there have been times when Wrecycleit has made money on recycling and times haven't.

The market is forever changing. No matter the market circumstances, Wrecycleit is committed to recycling today and for years to come.

What do I do if there is a missed collection?
Missed Collection Policy If materials are place in collection areas at appropriate time and we do not collect items contact us and we will return to collect items within 24hours.

If materials were not placed in collection areas by at the appropriate time, we will return to collect items at your next scheduled collection. If you would like items collected there will be a $10 trip fee in addition to your regular fees. We will not offer refunds for missed collections that are a result of items not being prepared.
